胜任愉快 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to be perfectly competent for a task and perform it with ease and enjoyment; to be fully capable of a job and find pleasure in doing it”. Literally, “Competent and pleasant”.
During the reign of Emperor Jing of Han, the stern official Zhi Du was resolute and strong-willed, dared to speak out, and was ruthless when handling official duties.
When he served as the Administrator of Jinan, the powerful local clans often bullied the weak and ran rampant in the countryside. Zhi Du executed the chief offenders, after which the rest of the people dared not commit any further misdeeds.
Sima Qian commented that Zhi Du acted decisively, and only in this way could he be fully competent and perform his duties with ease and satisfaction.
