见猎心喜 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to feel a surge of excitement and an urge to participate when witnessing others engage in an activity one was once fond of or skilled at”. Literally, “Seeing hunting, the heart delights”.
During the Northern Song Dynasty, there was a renowned scholar named Cheng Hao, also known as Mr. Mingdao. He was intelligent from a young age and became famous for lecturing in Xijing Luoyang during his youth. His younger brother, Cheng Yi, was also a distinguished scholar who frequently lectured; people referred to them as "The Two Chengs." Their philosophies were later inherited and further developed by Zhu Xi, forming what is known as the "Cheng-Zhu School."
When Cheng Yi was sixteen or seventeen, he was very fond of hunting. However, as he dedicated himself to scholarly pursuits, he no longer had the time or energy for it. One day, he regretfully remarked to a friend, "My passion for hunting is now a thing of the past!". A friend named Zhou Maoshu heard this remark and specifically approached Cheng Hao, the elder brother. Zhou Maoshu said, "What your brother has said may not be entirely true for you. Don't be so quick to dismiss the possibility for yourself. I believe you don't truly dislike hunting; you've merely suppressed that desire. Perhaps one day, that longing will resurface, and you'll once again joyfully go hunting, just as you might have done in your youth." Cheng Hao simply laughed heartily, offering no direct response to Zhou Maoshu's words.
Twelve years later, Zhou Maoshu's prediction was validated by Cheng Hao's experience. Cheng Hao was returning from an outing when he saw people hunting in the fields. Immediately, the pleasure of hunting came to mind, and he felt an overwhelming urge to join in, his hands itching with excitement. However, he then remembered Zhou Maoshu's earlier words. He forcibly suppressed his desire to hunt and continued straight home.
