游响停云 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “describes an exceptionally powerful and resonant singing voice”. So captivating and impressive that it metaphorically causes wandering echoes to halt the moving clouds, signifying extraordinary vocal skill and impact. Literally, “Wandering sound stops clouds”.
During the Warring States period, Xue Tan, a singer from the State of Qin, became an apprentice to the renowned vocalist Qin Qing.
After diligent study, Xue Tan's skills improved significantly, and he decided to bid farewell to his teacher.
Qin Qing hosted a farewell banquet in the suburbs. During the feast, he sang a very poignant and majestic song. His voice resonated through the woods and was so powerful it seemed to cause the wandering echoes to halt the clouds (游响停云).
Xue Tan felt immensely ashamed, realizing the vast difference in their skill, and decided to stay and continue his studies under Qin Qing.
