伯仁由我而死 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to bear indirect responsibility for someone's death or severe misfortune, often due to inaction or complicity”. Literally, “Bo Ren died because of me”.
During the reign of Emperor Yuan of the Jin Dynasty, Zhou Yong, who held the position of Pushe (an official title), was a close friend of Prime Minister Wang Dao. Wang Dao's cousin, Wang Dun, plotted a rebellion and subsequently killed Zhou Yong.
Before this, Wang Dun had sought Wang Dao's opinion on his rebellious plans, but Wang Dao neither explicitly approved nor disapproved, remaining noncommittal.
Later, Wang Dao discovered that Zhou Yong had, on several occasions, spoken in his defense before Emperor Yuan regarding Wang Dun's rebellion. Learning this, Wang Dao was deeply moved to tears and sighed, "Though I did not kill him, he died because of me."
