民无噍类 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “the common people have no means of survival”. They are left without anyone alive or able to subsist.
During the Southern Song Dynasty, Yue Fei led the Yue Family Army in a valiant resistance against the Jin invaders. After ten years of war, they were on the verge of reaching Huanglong Prefecture, the Jin capital. However, Emperor Gaozong issued twelve gold plaques in a single day, ordering Yue Fei to withdraw his troops.
As Yue Fei prepared to retreat, the local populace pleaded with them to stay, fearing that if the Song army left, they would have no means of survival, as the Jin soldiers would surely retaliate and exact revenge.
