Story:

During the Southern Tang dynasty, Master Fayan, the founder of the Fayan sect, was lecturing on Buddhist scriptures to the monks at Qingliang Temple in Jinling, hoping they would devote themselves to Buddhism and observe the monastic rules.

However, Monk Fateng, though very intelligent, disliked observing these rules.

Master Fayan then asked who among them could remove the golden bell from the neck of a fierce tiger.

Monk Fateng replied, "To untie the bell, one must be the one who tied it."
