愤不顾身 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to act courageously and selflessly”. Without regard for personal safety or consequences. Literally, “indignant and disregard oneself”.
During the Western Jin Dynasty, Shi Chong, a wealthy man from Bohai, was exceedingly rich. He built a magnificent Golden Valley Garden villa specifically for his beloved singer, Lüzhu.
After being dismissed from his official post, he stayed at home, constantly guarding Lüzhu. Sun Xiu, the Minister of the Secretariat, happened to see the famous Lüzhu and was captivated by her beauty.
He demanded Lüzhu from Shi Chong, but was refused. Enraged, Sun Xiu sent soldiers to seize her by force. In an act of indignant self-sacrifice (愤不顾身), Lüzhu jumped from a high building to her death.
