天下无双 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “Unparalleled in the world”. Unique and matchless; peerless. Literally, “None under heaven is a match”.
The idiom "天下无双" (tiān xià wú shuāng), meaning "none such under heaven; unparalleled," originates from "Records of the Grand Historian: Biography of Lord Xinling" (《史记 信陵君列传》).
The story tells of Huang Xiang, a native of Jiangxia in Hubei, who lost his mother early in life. He and his father, a minor official, lived a simple and humble life. Huang Xiang was known for his exceptional filial piety. In the scorching summer, he would fan his father's bed and pillow to cool the mat, ensuring his father slept comfortably. In the biting winter, he would first get into the quilt to warm it before inviting his father to sleep.
His father cherished him deeply and helped him acquire extensive knowledge. As Huang Xiang grew older, he became an official. During his tenure as the Administrator of Weijun, a severe flood disaster struck, leaving many local residents homeless and without food or clothing. Huang Xiang used his own salary and family assets to distribute among the affected people.
Because of his diligent study in his youth, his vast knowledge, and his profound filial piety towards his father, he earned widespread praise. At that time, a folk rhyme circulated in the capital: "Unparalleled under heaven, Huang Xiang of Jiangxia."
