Origin and Story of 半部论语
Zhao Pu was originally a judicial official under Zhao Kuangyin. In 960 AD, Zhao Kuangyin led his army north, and when they reached Chenqiao, Zhao Pu advised him, leading to the Chenqiao mutiny. Zhao Kuangyin subsequently became emperor, establishing the Song Dynasty (Emperor Taizu of Song). Zhao Pu then assisted Emperor Taizu in unifying the country and was appointed prime minister.
After Emperor Taizu's death, his younger brother, Zhao Kuangyi (Emperor Taizong of Song), ascended the throne. Zhao Pu continued to serve as prime minister during Emperor Taizong's reign. Some courtiers criticized Zhao Pu, saying his scholarship was shallow, having only read 'The Analects', and thus he was unfit for his high office.
One day, Emperor Taizong asked Zhao Pu, 'Is it true, as some say, that you have only read one book, 'The Analects'?' Zhao Pu honestly replied, 'Indeed, what I know does not extend beyond 'The Analects.' In the past, I used half of 'The Analects' to assist Emperor Taizu in bringing peace to the world. Now, I use half of 'The Analects' to assist Your Majesty, and the world is tranquil.'
Later, after Zhao Pu passed away, his family opened his book cabinet, and true to his words, they found only the twenty chapters of 'The Analects' inside.
