必争之地 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “a strategically vital location that opposing forces are compelled to fight for due to its critical importance or advantage”. Literally, “A place that must be contended for”.
After the Eastern Wei was succeeded by the Northern Qi, continuous wars broke out with the Western Wei.
Following the consolidation of his eastern borders, Yuwen Tai of the Western Wei dispatched General Wang Yue to lead an army and capture Hanzhong. Yang Xian, the lord of Hanzhong city, promptly surrendered.
Wang Yue then sent a rapid message to Daxi Wu, reporting that after taking Hanzhong, their next goal was to conquer Baima City. He stressed that Baima was a 'must-contend-for place,' as securing it would effectively cut off the retreat route for the Shu forces.
