Origin and Story of 鸡犬升天

During the Western Han Dynasty, there was a renowned thinker and literatus named Liu An. He inherited his father's fiefdom and became the King of Huainan. Liu An read many books but became particularly fascinated with Taoist scriptures, developing the idea of refining elixirs to achieve immortality. Thus, he sought out Taoist priests with immortal formulas and divine arts everywhere.

One day, he heard about an immortal elder named Bagong, who possessed a secret formula for refining immortal elixirs but never shared it with others. So, Liu An went to look for Bagong. Unexpectedly, Bagong traveled extensively, and despite much hardship, Liu An couldn't find him.

However, Liu An remained devoted to his search, and his sincerity touched Bagong. One day, Bagong came to Liu An's home, imparted the method for refining immortal elixirs, and told him that once the elixir was made, consuming it would grant immortality and allow him to ascend to heaven.

Liu An diligently and piously cultivated himself every day. Later, he 'truly' refined the immortal elixir. At this point, he felt his body become light and ethereal, as if floating. The elixirs were crystal clear. He knew the moment had come to ascend to heaven, so he bathed, changed clothes, burned incense, prayed, and then consumed the elixir... Liu An felt his body lighten, and looking down, he realized he was already standing among the clouds.

After Liu An ascended to immortality, the scattered elixirs in his courtyard were eaten by the chickens and dogs. They too floated up into the sky and became immortals. Liu An, surrounded by the chickens and dogs, slowly disappeared.
