During the Western Jin Dynasty, Shi Chong, the Inspector of Jingzhou, amassed immense wealth by robbing merchants from other regions. As a high official in the capital, he spent lavishly.
Wang Kai, Emperor Wu of Jin's uncle, sought ways to compete with Shi Chong in terms of wealth. Wang Kai was very proud of a coral tree he acquired and brought it to Shi Chong's house.
Shi Chong then displayed an astounding array of precious treasures, as abundant and diverse as a feast of land and sea delicacies, and presented them to Wang Kai. Wang Kai sighed, admitting his inferiority.
