Origin and Story of 绨袍之义

Fan Ju, a scholar from the State of Wei, accompanied Xu Jia, a minister from Wei, on an envoy mission to the State of Qi. Xu Jia suspected Fan Ju of colluding with Qi and reported him to the Wei prime minister upon their return. Fan Ju was unjustly beaten and severely injured. He then changed his name to Zhang Lu and fled to the State of Qin, where he eventually rose to become its prime minister.

Years later, when Xu Jia was on an envoy mission to Qin, Fan Ju disguised himself as a poor, lowly person to meet him. Seeing Fan Ju's miserable state, Xu Jia took pity on him and gave him a coarse silk robe.

When Xu Jia later discovered that this 'poor man' was actually the powerful Prime Minister of Qin, he was terrified and repeatedly apologized. However, Fan Ju, remembering Xu Jia's small act of kindness in the past, spared his life.
