Story:

During the late Eastern Han Dynasty, Zong Shilin looked down upon Cao Cao's character and always avoided associating with him. Cao Cao was deeply displeased.

Later, when Cao Cao became Sikong (Minister of Works) and took charge of government affairs, he asked Zong Shilin if they could now associate. Zong Shilin replied, "The resolve of pine and cypress still remains."

After Cao Cao gained control of power, he found Zong Shilin guilty, stating that his position did not match his virtue.
