蓬生麻中 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to be positively influenced by a good environment and develop into a good or upright person, much like a naturally sprawling weed grows straight when surrounded by tall, straight hemp”. Literally, “Fleabane grows among hemp”.
Liu Xu, the fifth son of Emperor Wu of Han, was granted the title Prince of Guangling. Embittered by not inheriting the throne, he harbored resentment towards his younger brother Liu Fuling (Emperor Zhao).
He hired sorceresses to curse Emperor Zhao to an early death. Later, he used similar means to curse Liu He and Liu Xun (Emperor Xuan).
Seeing these efforts were fruitless, he conspired with Liu Yanshou to usurp the throne.
Liu Xu's son, Liu Bao, also committed many evil deeds, just like his father.
