如汤沃雪 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “describes something that is easily resolved or overcome, like snow melting instantly when hot water is poured on it; to vanish or dissolve with great ease”. Literally, “Like hot water pouring on snow”.
During the Western Han Dynasty, Liu Bang's enfeoffed princes and their descendants indulged in extravagant and debauched lifestyles. The literati Mei Cheng, concerned about their conduct, wrote a famous piece called "Qi Fa" (Seven Exhortations) to admonish them.
The work describes a crown prince of the State of Chu during the Spring and Autumn Period who fell ill due to his excessive indulgence. A doctor was summoned and, understanding the root cause, used seven matters to enlighten the prince.
Among these, he mentioned "eating little and drinking much, like hot water pouring on snow" (小饭大啜,如汤沃雪). This phrase was used to illustrate how readily his ailments, caused by overindulgence, could be dispelled if he were to change his habits.
The prince quickly recovered after being enlightened, demonstrating how easily a problem could be resolved once the right approach was taken.
