嬉笑怒骂 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to express a full range of emotions”. From joy to anger, in writing or speech, creating compelling and insightful work regardless of style or subject matter. Literally, “Playful laughter, anger, and scolding”.
During the Song Dynasty, Su Dongpo was celebrating his birthday at Red Cliff in Huanggang. He suddenly heard a melodious flute sound from the river. Upon sending someone to inquire, he learned that it was Li Wei, a jinshi (a successful candidate in the imperial examination), playing to celebrate his birthday.
Deeply moved, Su Dongpo immediately composed 'Preface to Li Wei's Flute Playing' on the spot. Huang Tingjian, in his 'Eulogy for Master Dongpo', praised him by saying: 'Dongpo's wine, Red Cliff's flute, his playful laughter and angry scolding, all became excellent articles.'
