损人益己 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to harm others to benefit oneself”. To gain advantage at the expense of others. Literally, “Harm others, benefit self”.
During the Tang Dynasty, Lu Xiangxian was ambitious and exceptionally talented in his youth. He earned the admiration of Ji Xu, the then Vice Minister of Personnel, who praised him for his "lofty talent and elegant demeanor" and recommended him to serve as the Luoyang Commandant.
Lu Xiangxian lived a simple and contented life, finding joy in what he had. He was an upright official who disliked flattering powerful figures. He believed that governance should not rely on harsh punishments to assert authority, and one should never engage in actions that harm others to benefit oneself.
