卧榻之侧,岂容鼾睡 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “one cannot tolerate others encroaching on one's own territory or sphere of influence; a powerful person will not allow rivals or threats within their domain”. Literally, “How can one tolerate snoring beside one's bed?”.
In 960 AD, Zhao Kuangyin established the Song Dynasty. He adopted a strategy of defeating rivals one by one, successively conquering states such as Jingnan, Hunan, and Later Shu.
In 974, he summoned Li Yu, the last emperor of the Southern Tang Dynasty, to his court in Bianjing. Fearing he would be detained, Li Yu sent Xu Xuan to Bianjing to seek peace.
Emperor Taizu of Song directly stated, "How can I allow others to snore beside my bed?"
