白头偕老 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to grow old together as a devoted couple”. To live a long and loving life together until old age; to remain a devoted couple to the end of their lives. Literally, “Grow old together with white hair”.
Once, there was a boy deeply devoted to love, named Cao Shizhen, who fell in love with a girl named Zhang You. Cao Shizhen's confession was simple yet sincere, arguably the most romantic and earnest declaration.
During a blossoming season, Cao Shizhen sat beside Zhang You, took her hand, and wrote ten characters on her palm: 'Today I hold your hand, wishing to grow old with you.' Before Zhang You could fully comprehend, Cao Shizhen continued, 'The August air has adorned Xiaoxiang so perfectly for romance; let's not disappoint heaven's kind intention.'
Thus began a love envied even by heaven, giving 'Bai Tou Xie Lao' a deeper meaning of enduring love.
