Jia Lian, following You Sanjie's advice, met Xue Pan and Liu Xianglian during an official trip. Jia Lian strongly recommended You Sanjie to Liu Xianglian, and Xue Pan also supported the idea of strengthening family ties through marriage.
Liu Xianglian agreed to the engagement and entrusted Jia Lian with an engagement gift to bring back.
Several months later, Liu Xianglian heard that You Sanjie had had an affair with her brother-in-law and decided to break off the engagement.
You Sanjie, deeply shamed, committed suicide on the spot and died.
Liu Xianglian, feeling remorse and despair, subsequently became a monk.
