Towards the end of the Shang Dynasty, King Wu of Zhou conquered the Shang capital and established the Zhou Dynasty. King Wu was unsure how to deal with the remaining Shang officials and royal family members.
His military advisor Jiang Ziya said: 'If you love a person, you even love the crows on their roof. These officials all aided the tyrant, and thus should be executed.'
However, Duke of Zhou believed this was inappropriate, arguing that the guilt of King Zhou should not be borne by them.
