相待如宾 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to treat each other with mutual respect and courtesy”. As if they were cherished guests (typically used to describe a harmonious husband and wife relationship). Literally, “Treat each other like guests”.
During the Spring and Autumn period, Xuchen, a high official of the Jin state, was sent on a diplomatic mission.
While passing through Jidi, he saw a farmer weeding in the fields.
The farmer's wife brought lunch to the field and respectfully presented it to her husband with both hands. The husband solemnly accepted the meal and ate, while his wife stood quietly by, waiting for him to finish.
Xuchen was deeply moved by their mutual respect and courtesy, observing how they treated each other like guests.
He was so impressed that he later recommended the farmer to Duke Wen of Jin.
