During the Spring and Autumn period, Confucius began lecturing at a young age, attracting many listeners. During a break, he discussed ideals with his disciples.

Zilu said, "Give me a state of a thousand chariots; even if it faces internal strife and external threats, in just three years, I can make all its people brave and resourceful, capable of military service."

Confucius smiled, finding him too fond of valor and conflict. He then turned to Ran Qiu, who advocated for establishing prosperity through rites and music.
