袁安高卧 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to maintain one's integrity and principles even when in poverty or difficult circumstances; to remain steadfast in one's moral character despite hardship”. Literally, “Yuan An's noble repose”.
During the Han Dynasty, before Yuan An rose to prominence, a heavy snowfall blanketed Luoyang. Many people ventured out to beg for food, but Yuan An alone remained in his house, lying still and unaffected.
The Luoyang county magistrate, inspecting households door-to-door, arrived at Yuan An's residence. Upon witnessing his remarkable virtue and steadfastness, the magistrate recommended him as a Xiaolian (a candidate for official appointment based on filial piety and integrity).
Later, Yuan An successively served as the prefect of Yinping and the magistrate of Rencheng.
