歌于斯,哭于斯 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to sing and cry here”. Refers to one's permanent dwelling or home where one experiences all of life's joys and sorrows, implying a place where one lives out their entire life. Literally, “Sing here, cry here”.
When a new residence was completed for Zhao Wu, also known as Lord Wen of Jin, Zhang Lao, a high official from the State of Jin, went to offer his congratulations.
He exclaimed, "How grand and magnificent! May you sing here, cry here, and gather your entire clan here!"
Those present were quite astonished. Lord Wen of Jin responded, "If I, Wu, can truly sing here, cry here, and gather my clan here, it means I will have lived a complete life, preserved in body and spirit, to join my ancestors in the netherworld!"
People thereafter praised Lord Wen of Jin for his wisdom in accepting such profound well-wishes.
