Story:

In the early Northern Song Dynasty, Emperor Taizu of Song dispatched General Cao Han to lead his army in an attack against Hu Ze.

Upon reaching Lushan Temple in Jiujiang, all the monks in the temple went into hiding, with the sole exception of Monk Yuande, who remained steadfast.

Cao Han questioned Yuande, asking if he had heard of a general who 'kills without batting an eyelid.' Yuande responded that he was a monk who feared no death.

Cao Han then had no alternative but to inquire in a more softened tone. It was only then that Yuande summoned back all the other monks.
