扣槃扪籥 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to have a partial and superficial understanding, failing to grasp the essence or main point; to make judgments based on incomplete information”.
Once upon a time, there was a man born blind. He asked people what the sun was like. Someone told him the sun was like a bronze basin.
The blind man went home and found that a bronze basin could be tapped to make a sound, so he mistakenly thought the sound of tapping was the sun.
Later, he was told that the sun doesn't make a sound but has heat like a candle. He went home and mistook a candle for the sun.
One day, he found that a 'yue' (an ancient flute-like instrument) looked very similar to a candle, and he also mistook it for the sun.
