陈雷胶漆 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to describe an extremely close and inseparable friendship”. Characterized by deep devotion and mutual understanding, much like glue and lacquer that bind things firmly together. It metaphorically refers to the profound bond between the historical figures Chen Zhong and Lei Yi.
During the Han Dynasty, Governor Zhang Yun recommended Chen Zhong as 'Xiaolian,' a prestigious official position. However, Chen Zhong insisted on yielding this opportunity to his close friend, Lei Yi, repeatedly refusing the offer more than a dozen times. Despite Chen Zhong's persistent efforts, Zhang Yun did not accept his proposal.
Later, both Chen Zhong and Lei Yi were appointed as 'Shangshu Lang' (secretaries to the emperor). Unfortunately, Lei Yi was slandered and subsequently dismissed from his official post, forcing him to return to his hometown. Chen Zhong, unwavering in his loyalty, submitted numerous petitions to the emperor to defend Lei Yi, but his efforts proved futile.
In an act of profound friendship, Chen Zhong then resigned from his own position and traveled to be with Lei Yi.
