大功毕成 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “a great project or task is successfully completed”. A major undertaking has been accomplished. Literally, “Great work fully accomplished”.
Towards the end of the Western Han Dynasty, Wang Mang, the Anhan Duke and an imperial relative, wielded absolute power.
He emulated the Duke of Zhou by constructing a Grand Hall (Ming堂) and establishing Yongling Terrace, gathering scholars from across the land to lecture and write. He successively recruited thousands of people to compose works and eulogies in his praise.
He ordered over 100,000 people to write celebratory poems for him, and it took 20 days for this monumental task to be accomplished.
His ambition grew ever larger, and he eventually simply declared himself emperor.
