Towards the end of the Western Han Dynasty, Wang Mang, the Duke of Anhan and a powerful relative of the empress, usurped power.
He emulated the Duke of Zhou by constructing the Hall of Light (Mingtag) and establishing the Yongling Platform.
He gathered scholars from all over the empire to lecture and write, recruiting thousands to compose texts that glorified him. He ordered over 100,000 people to write eulogies for him, a monumental task that took 20 days to bring to a successful completion.
His ambition grew boundless, and eventually, he simply proclaimed himself emperor.
