画荻教子 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “refers to a mother's ingenious and dedicated method of educating her child, often in the face of poverty or adversity; praising a mother for her excellent parenting skills”. Literally, “drawing on reeds to teach one's son”.
During the Northern Song Dynasty, Ouyang Xiu lost his father when he was four years old, and his mother had to support the family alone. Because they were poor and couldn't afford writing materials, his mother dug a large pit at home, filled it with sand, and smoothed the surface.
She then used a reed stalk as a pen to write characters on the sand, teaching Ouyang Xiu how to read and write them by hand.
