Origin and Story of 金屋藏娇

When Emperor Wu of Han, Liu Che, was four years old, his elder brother Liu Rong was the crown prince. Liu Che was able to become the crown prince thanks to the help of Princess Liu Piao, Emperor Jing's elder sister.

Princess Liu Piao originally intended to marry her daughter, Chen Ajiao, to Crown Prince Liu Rong, hoping she would become empress. However, Liu Rong's mother, Consort Li, did not appreciate this gesture, so Princess Liu Piao turned her attention to Liu Che.

One day, she asked Liu Che if he would be willing to marry Ajiao. Liu Che, who also liked Ajiao, grandly declared upon hearing his aunt's question, "If I could marry Ajiao in the future, I would personally build a golden house for her to live in."

Emperor Jing, seeing his son's spirited promise, agreed to the marriage. Later, Liu Che became emperor and indeed married Ajiao, building magnificent palaces to fulfill his childhood promise.
