十年读书 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to dedicate oneself to long-term study”. To study diligently for many years. Literally, “ten years of reading/study”.
During the Southern and Northern Dynasties period, internal strife plagued the Liu Song dynasty, resulting in fratricide and the persecution of loyal and virtuous officials. People lived in constant apprehension.
Minister Shen Youzhi was at times trusted as a loyal subject and at other times ostracized as a rebel. Disheartened by these turbulent circumstances, he immersed himself in studying 'Records of the Grand Historian' (Shiji) and 'Book of Han' (Hanshu).
He often sighed with regret, saying, 'If only I had known earlier that poverty and prosperity are fated, I would regret not having studied diligently for ten years.'
