Ma Ji, the local prefect, admired Song Xian's character and specifically went to invite him to take an official position. Song Xian, guessing Ma Ji's intention, immediately closed his door and refused to meet him.

Ma Ji believed that Song Xian remained unmoved by high office and generous emoluments, maintaining his integrity and living a simple, self-sufficient life. Filled with admiration, Ma Ji exclaimed that Song Xian was truly 'a dragon among men'.
