覆鹿寻蕉 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to mistake reality for a dream or illusion, often leading to confusion and errors; to be unable to distinguish between what is real and what is imagined”. Literally, “Cover a deer, search for firewood”.
Once, a man from the State of Zheng was gathering firewood in the wilderness when he spotted an injured deer. He killed the deer and, fearing pursuers, quickly hid it in a ditch, covering it with some plantain leaves.
As night fell, he tried to locate the deer to take it home, but despite his efforts, he couldn't find it anywhere. Eventually, he gave up, convincing himself that the entire event had merely been a dream.
