邯郸梦 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “a metaphor for a fleeting, illusory dream of prosperity and success”. An empty or baseless ambition that ultimately comes to naught, like a grand dream that vanishes upon waking. Literally, “Handan dream”.
Once upon a time, a down-and-out scholar named Lu Sheng met a Taoist priest named Lu Weng at an inn in Handan.
Lu Weng gave him a pillow. At that moment, the innkeeper had just started cooking millet rice.
Lu Sheng took a short nap, and in his dream, he passed the imperial examination, became a prime minister, married a beautiful wife, had many children and grandchildren, and lived a perfectly happy life.
When he woke up, the innkeeper's millet rice was not even cooked yet.
