Legend has it that in ancient times, the White Snake Spirit (Bai Suzhen) and Xu Xian fell in love at first sight and became husband and wife.
Monk Fahai, seeing a demonic aura about Xu Xian, took him to Jinshan Temple and hid him behind his dharma seat.
The White Snake Spirit, accompanied by the Green Snake Spirit (Xiaoqing), came to search for her husband, but Fahai refused her access.
Left with no choice, the White Snake Spirit engaged in a magical battle with Fahai, leading to "water overflowing Jinshan Mountain."
Fahai summoned heavenly soldiers and generals to fight the White Snake, ultimately trapping her beneath Leifeng Pagoda.
