南征北伐 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to campaign or fight battles extensively across different regions”. Often implying a long and arduous struggle or journey. Literally, “South expedition north campaign”.
In 828 BC, Jing, the son of King Li of Zhou, ascended the throne, becoming King Xuan of Zhou. He was determined to restore the might of the Zhou Dynasty.
He abolished the land registration system and implemented several reforms. He also dispatched troops to attack tribes such as the Huaiyi and Xurong in the north, and the Manjing in the south.
The dynasty's power was thus re-established, and he was hailed as a 'restorer.'
However, he controversially appointed Xi as the successor to Duke Wu of Lu, which subsequently caused internal strife within the State of Lu.
