攀车卧辙 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to express profound reluctance to part with a beloved official, often by physically obstructing their departure, such as by grasping their carriage or lying in its path; metaphorically used to praise a highly esteemed public servant and the public's desire for them to stay”. Literally, “Grasp the carriage, lie in the ruts”.
During the Han Dynasty, when Hou Ba served as the Grand Administrator of Huaiping, he governed with great care for the common people's welfare, treating them as his own children.
After Emperor Liu Xiu ascended the throne, he transferred Hou Ba to serve as the Grand Minister of Works and sent an envoy to summon him. The common people, young and old, came out weeping, blocking the envoy's carriage. Some even lay down in the path of the wheels, refusing to let him depart, all earnestly hoping he would remain in his current local office.
