Once, Zilu asked him whether he should act immediately upon hearing a correct opinion. Confucius advised him to first consult his father and elder brothers.

Later, Ran You asked the same question, and Confucius told him he could act immediately.

Another student, Gong Xihua, was puzzled by the differing advice. Confucius explained that Ran You was often too hesitant and needed encouragement to act, while Zilu was impetuous and impulsive, requiring caution and consideration before acting.

This demonstrated Confucius's profound understanding of teaching students in accordance with their individual aptitudes and personalities.
