锦屏射雀 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to win a desirable spouse or achieve a significant success by demonstrating exceptional talent, skill, or achievement, often in a competitive situation, much like the story of selecting a son-in-law through an archery challenge”. Literally, “Shooting peacocks on the brocade screen”.
During the Tang Dynasty, there was a respected official named Dou Rong. He had a beautiful and talented daughter and believed she deserved an exceptional husband, not just an ordinary man. To find a truly worthy son-in-law, he came up with a unique challenge.
He had two peacocks painted on a silk screen at the entrance of his mansion. He announced that any suitor who could shoot both peacocks' eyes would be granted his daughter's hand in marriage. Many young noblemen and talented individuals came to try their luck, but none succeeded.
Eventually, Li Yuan, who would later become Emperor Gaozu of Tang, stepped forward. With a single, remarkable arrow, he precisely hit both eyes of the peacocks, demonstrating extraordinary skill. True to his word, Dou Rong married his daughter to Li Yuan.
This story became the origin of the idiom "锦屏射雀", symbolizing winning a bride or achieving a great success through outstanding ability.
