Story:

During the Warring States period, Zi Zhi, the prime minister of the State of Yan, ruled with tyranny, leading to chaos.

General Zi Bei and Prince Ping led troops to suppress him, causing great disorder within the state.

King Xuan of Qi seized this opportunity to attack Yan, occupying most of its territory.

The common people of Yan, having suffered under Zi Zhi's misrule, welcomed the Qi army by bringing them food in bamboo baskets and water in pots.

King Xuan of Qi considered annexing Yan and sought advice from Mencius. Mencius wisely responded, "If you annex them, you will only plunge them into deeper suffering."
