后来之秀 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “a rising star”. A promising young talent; an outstanding person among the younger generation. Literally, “Outstanding talent of the younger generation”.
During the Eastern Jin Dynasty, a young official named Wang Chen went to visit his scholar uncle, Fan Ning. Zhang Xuan happened to be present at Fan's residence.
Zhang Xuan assumed the air of an elder, intending for Wang Chen to show him deference. Wang Chen, however, paid him no mind.
Fan Ning admonished Wang Chen, but Wang Chen responded that elders should be modest.
Fan Ning, recognizing Wang Chen's youth and discerning insight, exclaimed that he was truly a 'rising star of the later generation' (后来之秀).
