During the Warring States period, King Xuan of Qi hosted Mencius in his palace. He asked Mencius if a virtuous ruler should share joy with his people.
Mencius replied, "When a ruler finds joy in the happiness of his people, the people will, in turn, find joy in the happiness of their ruler. If a ruler shares both the sorrows and joys of all under heaven, no one in the world can stand against them."
King Xuan of Qi found Mencius's words very reasonable.
