异曲同工 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “different in approach but equally brilliant in result”. Different in form but identical in essence or effect; different tunes, same masterful performance. Literally, “different tunes, same masterful skill”.
During the Western Han Dynasty, two prominent literary figures, Sima Xiangru and Yang Xiong, were both renowned for their fu (rhapsodies).
Sima Xiangru, active during Emperor Jing's reign, penned masterpieces like 'Zixu Fu' and 'Shanglin Fu,' characterized by their elaborate and ornate language.
Later, during Emperor Cheng's time, Yang Xiong composed works such as 'Ganquan Fu' and 'Hedong Fu,' which, while advocating for political reform, also showcased exceptional literary skill.
The Tang Dynasty literary giant Han Yu, when commenting on their works, remarked, 'Ziyun (Yang Xiong's courtesy name) is like Sima Xiangru, different in melody but equally masterful in craftsmanship.'
This famous critique highlighted that despite their distinct styles and subjects, both writers achieved an equally high level of artistic excellence, illustrating the concept of 'yì qǔ tóng gōng'.
