Story:
In ancient times, Yu the Great rendered meritorious service in controlling floods. Emperor Shun believed he was most qualified to inherit the throne, so he prepared to abdicate in his favor.
He admonished Yu, saying, "If you are neither arrogant nor impatient, no one in the world will contend with you for superiority. If you do not boast about yourself, no one in the world will contend with you for fame. Human hearts are treacherous, and the Way's heart is profound. Therefore, to be a sage, one must not listen to unsubstantiated talk."
