丹心碧血 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “Unwavering loyalty and selfless devotion”. Often unto death, symbolizing profound dedication and sacrifice. Literally, “Crimson heart, jade-green blood”.
During the Zhou Dynasty, Chang Hong, a high official under Duke Liu Wen, lived a life of unwavering loyalty to the court. He was neither servile nor overbearing, possessing immense integrity.
Due to his uprightness, he offended powerful figures at court and was unjustly executed by the Zhou people.
Legend has it that at the time of his execution, some admirers collected his blood and kept it at home. Three years later, all these dried blood clots miraculously transformed into precious jade-green stones.
