兄弟孔怀 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “Brothers cherish each other deeply and long for one another”. Literally, “Brothers greatly cherish and long for each other”.
During the Sui Dynasty, three brothers from Jingzhao – Tian Zhen, Tian Guang, and Tian Qing – decided to divide their property and live separately after establishing their own families. In front of their main hall stood a flourishing Bauhinia tree, which they planned to cut down the next day and divide into three parts.
However, overnight, the Bauhinia tree withered and died. Tian Zhen, deeply moved, said to his brothers, 'This tree, originally of one stock, withered away when we decided to divide it. How much more should we, as brothers who cherish and long for each other, not be separated?'
Hearing this, they decided not to split their family.
