掷杖成龙 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to make a grand or miraculous return to one's hometown”. Often implying a significant transformation or achievement, drawing from a legend of a staff turning into a dragon. Literally, “throw staff become dragon”.
An ancient legend tells of Fei Changfang, who once observed an old man selling medicine with a gourd hanging by his side. After selling all his wares, the old man would mysteriously leap into the gourd.
The following day, Fei Changfang paid a visit to the old man and, together, they entered the gourd. Inside, there were magnificent houses, fully furnished with every conceivable comfort.
Fei Changfang then studied the Dao under the old man's tutelage. Later, when it was time to return home, he rode a bamboo staff given to him by the old man.
Upon reaching Gebei Pond, he threw the bamboo staff into the water, and it astonishingly transformed into a colossal dragon, soaring away into the sky.
